Hello I'm so confused as to which is best for my CPU i don't understand threading and i only want the best cpu for world of warcraft. and what the hell is over clocking?! please excuse my ignorance i've never tried to configure my own pc's specs before. which is the best processor to get in my case; Intel® Core™ i7 620M 2.66 GHz (3.33GHz Turbo Mode, 4MB Cache) vs Intel® Core™ i7 720QM 1.6GHz (2.8 GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)

I Completely forgot to add in the the fact that i just started classes at devry for computer information sytems and web game design; so i will be utilizing this pc for gaming designing as well a playing WoW. I know i need a processor thats going to help my cpu as much as possible for wow, in addition to multi-tasking and eventually graphics. I was on Dell's website attempting to customize a Mx17 but there is no way i'm spending that amount of cash, on something i may not even need. I've tried finding sites and discussions in forums that could give me the general idea of how a processor actually works, but i've yet to find a site that actually has the information i need. I wish i had my texts books for next semesters classes right about now xD thanks in advance for your perceptiveness, and reply.

The i7-620m is a dual core, and will run cooler, give you a longer battery life, and be faster for games.

The i7-720qm is a quad core, will drain your battery much faster, put out more heat, but it will be faster for heavy multitasking (only very heavy though - the 620 will do fine for normal multitasking), as well as certain other applications that can use >2 cores.

Honestly, I'd stick with the 620 unless you have a good reason to need the quad.

i7 720QM is quad core which as cjl said will drain your battery faster where as
i7 620M is a dual core CPU and will play better with battery life.
And Overclocking means raising the clock speed of your CPU,when for example it says its clocked at 1.6Ghz and up to 2.8 with turbo,it means depending on the task that you do the clock speed will rise.
Between those i would go for i7 720QM if you want to do apps like PhotoShop,video rendering etc which benefit from a quad core CPU and also there are some games(not much) which benefit as well but if you want a better battery life then stick with i7 620M

And you dont usually OC a laptop CPU, since they are confined to a small area and you can't exactlly install a TRUE there...

Also, if you want to game on wow, I'd recommend ATI or Nvidia IGP at the least, if not some thing better (mobility radeon 4550 or 4570 or GF 8600M or one of the newer mobile radeon 54xx+ parts) if you want the details cranked on a 15 or 17 inch 1080p screen.

Intel Core i7 820QM 1.73GHz (3.06GHz Turbo Mode, 8MB Cache)
320GB Solid State Drive
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English
5.1 Channel Audio

I decided to go with the quad core just to be safe for school, I'm not really sure yet what software I'll be using for graphics and game design.
I appreciate the input .

Yes, I wouldn't usually choose a laptop but I'll feel more comfortable being able to bring it with me to class.

well usually you won't need quad cores for school, or they would provide a environment for you to work in (but hey I like my own stuff if needed for high processing stuff rather than sharing the lab rofl)


and nice 260M, its a nice G92b part that would serve you well in many games. now i do hope they got bumpgate sorted....

I recently went in the other direction between these two processors.

i7-620M
4GB/1033
250GB/7200
1600x900
9 cell battery

Like computerprogramnewb, I have need of a good reliable laptop, only my needs revolve around consulting and traveling. Needs to be a work computer by day and a fun computer at night. I chose the 620 for two basic reasons, power/battery life and hyper-threading. I was very temped to go with the quad core 720QM, but the unit eats 45W and runs at 1.6 GHz (although turbo boost will OC it). Plus, it's made on the 45 nm lithography. Once the QM's are made on a 32nm chip, that should reduce it's power consumption quite a bit. Until then, dual core is the best bang for the buck. Especially when I know I'll be replacing it in 2-3 years.
