Can you connect to an internal USB 2.0 Port (Mainboard) to an USB 3.0 Connector (Case)?

I've already seen plenty of questions that ask if you can connect internal USB 3.0 to USB 2.0. But how is it the other way around? Can I just put it there without any problems?

They sell adapters going from USB 2.0 male to USB 3.0 female and vice versa

they're not immediately connector compatible even though they're technically pin compatible...
