I have an old Dell Inspiron 546 that I've modified a bit so my kids can play the Lego games via Steam on our television. I upgraded the system to 4GB RAM (G.SKILL), a Radeon R7 240 (ASUS R7240-2GD3-L), and an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Dual Core 3 GHz. Everything was playing fine at 720p for the longest time, but recently I've started running into problems. Example:

LEGO Marvel Superheroes will play fine but the game will unexpectedly quit for no reason. There is no specific time, it just stops.

LEGO Star Wars and Batman unexpectedly quit on launch. These games used to start no problem, but now nothing. The unexpected quitting happened to all of them at some point.

This system is running the latest Windows 10. I tested the games on my main PC, a Core i5 with a GTX 970 and 16GB RAM and the games launch and play fine, so my initial thought it was a Windows 10 thing doesn't seem to be the case. And I don't think anything is overheating since the entire system doesn't lock up.

I also have the latest GPU drivers installed.

Any ideas why this might be happening? Any ideas on how to resolve this issue?

I really didn't think it was a PSU issue as the crashing only affected two games at launch, but with nothing else to try I replaced the 300-watt PSU with a 500 one. When that didn't work I also tried replacing the video card which also didn't work.

I moved the computer from the living room, where it was connected to the tv, to the bedroom and connected it to my regular computer monitor and everything worked. I couldn't figure out why the games would launch no problem connected to a computer display and not a tv so I tried bypassing the receiver and went directly to the tv. Nothing. Then I tried replacing the HDMI cable. Again, nothing.

I was ready to blame Windows 10 and format the computer and roll back to Windows 7 and I tried it again and what do you know? It worked! So what changed?

Normally I don't have a keyboard connected to the computer, only the XBOX 360 controller. As soon as the keyboard was connected boom... the games launched no problem. I have no idea why the games suddenly started crashing without a keyboard connected, but there you have it. That's what was wrong with the system.

So why am I posting this? I would love for someone to give me an explanation because I have no clue. Any thoughts on the matter?
