I have a western digital 3tb MyBook that suddenly quit working. It does not appear in my computer, devices and printers picks it up, with a ses driver error. In disk manager it appears but says not initialized. Have tried the original mybook encloser and a seagate one, Neither or my computers detects the seagate and the mybook one gives the same errors. Have updated all my drivers installed wd drive utilities tried easeus data recovery and portion master and still cant access my drive. Have tried a few different thing mentioned on here but nothing is working and dont wanna have to initialize my hard drive and lose all my data which is the backup from my laptop when it was formatted.

Hey there again, piercey55!

If you are able to see the SMART data from your internal SATA HDDs and you have SMART reading enabled in the BIOS, then the issue is coming from the USB controller in the WD My Book enclosure probably. I'd advise you to try testing it with some third-party utilities as well and see if they'd be able to read the WD My Book's SMART.

I'd also advise you to be careful when sharing screenshots, especially if they contain sensitive info about a product (Serial Number, ID,etc.). You might also want to do a warranty check on your external HDD and see if it's still covered. You can try using third-party data recovery tools, but unless we determine what the SMART attributes are, it's rather risky...
Welcome to the community, piercey55!

I'm truly sorry to hear about your struggles with the WD My Book external! :( However, you won't be able to access your files without the original My Book enclosure due to the hardware encryption. I'd advise you to consider contacting one of our data recovery partners worldwide. I'd also advise you run the QUICK and EXTENDED tests from WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows. The utility will help us determine the health and SMART status of the hard drive. I'd still try connecting the external HDD to a different computer, though, and see if you'd be able to access it from there.

Keep me posted with the troubleshooting!

Unfortunately, transferring data from one storage drive to another and having only one copy of it cannot be considered a backup! :( Having, at least, two identical copies of these files stored in different locations is one way to prevent any potential data loss in the future. The more, the better, actually.

Let me know how it goes!
