If i mainly use my PC

youtube, photoediting gopro conversions. Will a separate gpu matter in terms of speed and display quality on screen?

or are gpu's really for gaming?

Solution
I think that PC would be perfect for your uses. Throw in an SSD to run Windows and your most used programs on and it will be lightning quick for general computer use.

The only thing I don't like that they don't list the brand name of the motherboard or power supply but that build won't put much strain on the PSU so it should be fine.

At the moment I have an i5 2500 with Gigabyte Radeon 6850. im just planning on buying a new box.

skylake i7 6700 (maybe a k if I have the extra $$)
ssd 240 + 1tb
like 16gb (possible 32gb ram)
maybe push for 850psu
and this will come with HD 530 integrated. which sets me back around $1400 (Australian dollars)

I want to future proof my pc in the next 5yrs.

Not that there is anything wrong with my i5. Just that my son needs a pc now so im handing that down rather than buy a second hand i5-i7 (older chip with everything integrated) for around $500 -600

You should not go for an 850w PSU especially when you dont have a power hungry gpu. 550w should be enoug for you. Rember to buy quality units!

Thanks. If I was to get a gpu what would be a good one that can display 4k that will help with the quality and speed of my video editing and online hd streaming? I already have a 4k monitor. when I upgrade to a larger monitor just went 4k so I can go higher when I upgrade my pc. I know the hd530 supports 4k.

Gtx 980 should be good. But then you would need a beefier PSU. 650w Evga supernova would do the job. What comes to 4k with integrated GPU, I can't promise it will will handle even YouTube videos at that resolution.

Well it supports 4k, meaning that you can watch your desktop at 4k, but not do much with it.

Edit: After reading some other posts, some have reported 2d 4k programs working fine with Intel integrated graphics. You may buy those parts and decide later if you need a separate gpu.

There is no reason to buy a 980 for a general usage PC. Unless prices are insane in Australia you should be able to get something for much less than $1400 too. As others have pointed out there is no need for an 850W PSU either. A quality 450W+ unit should be fine for a PC without a GPU.

I also think that an i5-6500 could handle any general use program you throw at it without breaking a sweat. It would save you quite a bit of money over a i7-6700k. The i7 will only benefit you if you are doing things like rendering.

I would just try without a GPU first since Skylake integrated graphics are supposed to support 4K. As long as you aren't working with 3D applications like games you may find that this is enough. A separate GPU won't give you better image quality but it may make 4K videos run better if the integrated graphics struggle with them.

My advice is to try out the integrated graphics first and see if you are happy with performance. If you have trouble with 4K video grab a GTX 750Ti and be done with it. It will easily handle general computing and 4K video watching and it costs about 1/5 the price of a GTX 980. It will also run fine on the quality 450W power supply I suggested before.
