Hello,

i found out that my cpu keeps throttling while gaming or watching videos since it's freq drops from 4000 mhz on all cores to around 1400mhz while my temperature is only around 40°C
Why is it doing this?

Here are my specs:

Operating System
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1

CPU
AMD FX-8350 33 °C
Vishera 32nm Technology

RAM
16,0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 801MHz (11-11-11-28)

Motherboard
ASRock 960GM/U3S3 FX (CPUSocket) 38 °C

Graphics
27EA53 (1920x1080@60Hz)
2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 (EVGA) 48 °C

Storage
931GB SAMSUNG HD103SJ ATA Device (SATA) 27 °C

Optical Drives
QLMF S9MFSPY SCSI CdRom Device
QLMF S9MFSPY SCSI CdRom Device
TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223C ATA Device

Audio
Realtek High Definition Audio

You're definitely throttling, but it's due to your motherboard's VRMs overheating rather than the CPU overheating. You have a low end motherboard with weak VRMs that have no heatsinks on them, they cannot handle the power draw of the FX 8350. In fact, the FX 8350 isn't even supported by that particular board, the only FX chips supported are ones with a 95 Watt TDP or lower, so the fastest CPU it would work with would be the FX 8370E, which is a lower clocked 8 core FX chip that consumes less power than the 8350.

Bottom line is, you need a new motherboard. Cheapest option that can handle your CPU properly would be the Gigabyte GA-970-UD3P which tends to go for around 65 to 70 US Dollars.

I doubt its throttling.
Try in a constant 100% load stress test.
CPU's down clock themselves when load isn't 100% to save power.

Throttle only occurs an TJ Max, which is different for each CPU but roughly 90-100 degrees

Thanks for answering :)

A new motherboard it will be then, wich one should i get?

Can spend around €100 (I'm from Belgium)

Gonna have a talk with the company that sold me those parts since they shouldnt sell a package with a motherboard wich doesnt support the processor....

EDIT: Anything i could do right now to minimize the fps drops?

The board I mentioned above is a solid choice, Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P. If you want to spend more money, most 990FX chipset boards will work as well. Just make sure you get a board with an 8+2 phase VRM or better, especially if you want to try overclocking your CPU.

Edit: There are a few ways to try to ease the pressure on the board's VRMs so they don't overheat. One way would be to mount a case fan to blow air over that part of the motherboard ( the area to the left of the CPU socket). The other option is you try undervolting your CPU and see if it will run stable at lower voltage. You probably will have to underclock your processor if you do go the undervolting route, and try to get the power consumption down to levels similar to the more energy efficient 8 core FX CPUs that your board actually supports.

Thanks for the advice Supernova!

I spotted a little problem and found out why i got this motherboard.
my case needs a µATX and the ASRock 960GM/U3S3 was the only available one who kinda but not really supports my processor at the time.
Now the problem is those other motherboard are standard ATX.
So should i just get a bigger case or get another µATX?

Ok thanks man! :)

Now i just have to hope for them to trade me a new motherboard for this one wich will they will probably not :p.

EDIT: To what values do you think i have to downclock to get stable fps?
