I want to know that if my cpu tells that it will support only 2gb ddr2 ram Can I use any other

Actually i am upgrading a very old pc into a gaming pc .Can i use any other like 4or 8 maybe or will i have to buy a new motherboard :(?

ECC ram is exist 4GB, 8GB ram
but normal motherboard can't use them
Ecc ram is for server or workstarin
So you may change motherboard that have more ram slots
