How well does DOSBox typically work on a 3.0(+) GHz Pentium 4? I'm planing on building a retro rig soon, do you think a Pentium 4 3.0 GHz with a Nvidia GeForce 7950 GT would be able to play Dungeon Keeper or Daggerfall at a reasonable FPS? And the original Tomb Raider?

I've heard some people only getting 5-10 FPS on Pentium 4s so I'm a little worried. I also imagine it will require tweaking of the cfg file to get it working reasonably well.

really? only 5-10 fps?
i wouldnt have thought the emulation would suck so much power. I ran tomb raider on a flagship pentium 200mhz. when i got the monster 3d card - woah!

Thats some seriously bad coding if a 3ghz pentium 4 cant emulate a p1 200mhz game.

The issue is you aren't emulating a game, you are emulating an OS running in 8086 Real mode within a host OS running under 8086 Protected mode, and DosBox needs to do a lot of processing under the hood to do Real mode processing under protected mode. In short, there's a LOT of overhead involved.

I can't say what performance would be like honestly, though 5-10 FPS seems low.

Thanks for the answers. I just remembered that there's an old family desktop around here with a Prescott Pentium 4. I'll have to try those games on my current PC to see how they run, and compare it to the desktop, then I can decide whether or not a Pentium 4 will be enough.
