I recently got 2 500GB HDD. I'd like to be able to triple boot Win 7 32bit, Win 7 64bit, and Win XP. I had already the Win 7 32bit installed. So now I want to add the Win 7 64bit and Win XP.

The WIn 7 64bit installed successfully, but after the Windows XP file copying process finished and the system restart, I got the error "a disk read error occurred " and would never be able to boot into Windows XP.

I can reboot without problem into both Win 7 after I did a startup repair with the Win 7 32bit DVD.

The Win 7 32bit is installed on a separate HDD while the Win 7 64bit and Win XP are on the same HDD but different partition.

I tried reinstalling the Win XP several time and it's still giving me that same error. I even changed the Win XP CD just to make sure that the problem wasn't from the installation CD.

What could be the problem?

Solution
you can test the media in a virtual machine.
did you load the SATA drivers for the motherboard during install? IDK how new your motherboard is, but XP had issues with SATA drivers not being included with the installer.

the problem my friend is windows will not, never allow you to install an older OS.
You will need to first install windows XP, then win 7 32, then win 7 64.
you always have to install the oldest first.
you could run the windows XP in a virtual machine in both flavors of win 7. that way you won't have to start over

Then how are these even possible?

"windows will not, never allow you to install an older OS." IN WINDOWS try to install any older version, windows will not allow you.
the examples are not launching the installer from within windows they are booting to the installer

if you are running windows xp, you can install windows 7, you can boot to windows 7 and using windows 7 install 7-64.

the examples are another way. you install windows 7 first, then partition the drive, then install XP from the CD, leaving windows7 out of it.

in school we had to start with DOS, install win 3.1, then install win nt, then install win 98, then win 2k, then winxp, and then finally XP,SP1. and at each step we had to use the previous windows to install the next. This is how I thought you were going about it and in this scenario windows will not let you launch an older installer.

if windows is running she'll allow you to upgrade, but not downgrade in any way, you have to do that separately. as in the examples

if you cannot get the installer to run, are you sure the install disk is good? CD's do not last forever. do you have another install disk or source you could use?

I never install my Windows through another Windows. I always boot to the installer right after the system start at the point where it says "press any key to boot from CD/DVD..." exactly like how the examples shows it.

I tried using 2 different CD's. One that I got from purchasing my older PC, and another one that I downloaded off the internet a few days back. None of these CD's seems to be sorting out the problem. I'm assuming that it's not a faulty CD.

My motherboard is 7 yrs old. I might have to try loading the SATA driver. I'll give it a try later.
