I have a External hard Disk with bad sectors. It mostly contains photos and videos. Windows Explorer stops responding when I open certain folders.

I want to recover whatever can be. I tried using Windows 10 default copier and Tera Copy but they both tend to get hung at some file instead of skipping and proceeding.

What software can I use?

Hey there again, SpecificZod!

The number of bad sectors is definitely concerning, so I'd suggest you to be careful if you are going to do the data recovery by yourself. You never know what kind of data is stored there and which files exactly are corrupted. Besides the third-party utilities you can use for retrieving your files, you can give the Ubuntu Live CD a try as well, at your own risk, of course. Unfortunately, nobody can determine how successful the attempts will be, though. I'd still advise you to get in touch with the HDD manufacturer's customer support for any specific references.

Hope I was helpful. Best of luck!

Welcome to the community, SpecificZod!

This seems pretty unfortunate! :( Having too many bad sectors means that the data that was stored on those sectors is corrupted as well. Have you done any diagnostic tests? I'd advise you to use the external HDD manufacturer's brand-specific diagnostic tool to test its health and find out how severely damaged are those remapped sectors.

I'd advise you to consider contacting a professional data recovery company instead of using third-party tools by yourself. Retrieving data is rarely 100 % successful, so I'd not risk it if the data is truly important to you.

Keep me posted with the SMART results. Best of luck!

Hey SuperSoph! The data is not so important that I would want to spend some money. I just want to salvage what I can. Therefore I needed software. I am not sure but i think this is the info you asked for -
