Looking to upgrade my GPU from SLI GTX 580's

Hi everyone,

My current gaming rig has two 3GB GTX580's in SLI and can still handle anything I throw at it. Normally I would just ride this out and build an entirely new one in a couple of years, but my brother is in desperate need of an upgrade and can't shell out a ton of money for a new one.

My proposal to him is simple - I give him my spare gaming machine (i5 2500k, ssd, etc), along with the two 580's from my main one, and he buys me a new GPU. Now I know 580's are a few years old, but they can still perform very well. I should also note now that I run 3 monitors (all 1920 x 1080, I'm not using Nvidia's "Surround") so whatever I get needs to be able to handle them.

I'm leaning towards a 980 TI, and this one in particular - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487144#close

So, I have a couple questions:

1) How much of an upgrade, if any, is it going from two 580's to a single 980 TI?

2) The reviews on the card I linked look solid, and I like the idea of a 'Plug n Play' water cooling system for it, but is it worth it?

Any and all advice is appreciated, and please let me know if you need more information. Thank you all for taking the time to read and help!

That would be my suggestion as well. It would be quite a bit more powerful. I believe the GTX580 can be compared to a GTX660Ti quite favorably, and the 660Ti to a GTX760, which is a bit slower then a GTX960. One GTX960 is half a GTX980, so even the 16SM units of a 980 would be better then a pair of 580. The 980Ti has 22 SM units, so is that much faster then a 980.

(I retired my dual 580s for a single 980, no loss in performance that I could tell)

The water cooled ones are okay, but the air cooled ones will last longer. I've had one GPU mounted asetek style pump burn out on me. I would justt grab EVGAs ACX 2.0 SC or SSC card and call it a day. Or a Gigabyte Windforce or MSI Twin Frozr.

If you weren't looking to give this to your brother now I would say wait for Pascal near the end of the year since you say you aren't having performance issues. Since your brother wants a PC now it makes that a tougher call though.

I support all of this at 100%. I have a GTX960 SSC ACX and it runs dead silent and never saw it pass 67 degrees in a case with mediocre airflow. Guess the 980Ti version should have all those advantages and the speed you want. Gigabyte and MSI have great cards as well just like Eximo suggested.
