I'm about to start a build, and right now I have an old Lenovo IdeaCentre K330 I've been using which has an Intel i7-2600 in it. It's been in continuous use for over five years, but I still see that it's been getting good benchmarks and it certainly hasn't done me any wrong yet. I just want to know if I should re-use it in a new computer, given that it's so old and there are newer brands out there. Thanks!

My computer has the same chip and I would not upgrade. I still use mine I LOVE IT!!! The problem is at this point if you replace the chip you would have to replace the motherboard as the newer I7's use a new socket. New motherboards equal more money.

If you use windows 10 you may be looking at having to buy a new operating system if you replace either as well... This fact alone for upgrading is one reason I have held back in buying Windows 10.
The current crop will out perform it, but probably not by enough to be worth the cash involved in a mobo/cpu/RAM upgrade unless you have a specific need for the performance bump. What may be worthwhile would be the other factors that come with a newer chipset/motherboard. Things like more native SATA 3 ports, M.2 support, native USB 3 (3.1, USB C, etc), built in Wifi AC, and other assorted bells and whistles.

Best bet is see if you can look up specs for the models you'd like at Asus, Asrock, Gigabyte or MSI and see which ones look good. Then go on the normal shopping sites like newegg and amazon and see if anything is offered. Ebay is also an options for used and see what you can find.

It's not worth buying a LGA 1155 motherboard for it, so if you are building a new PC I would sell it to retain some cost, however it's not worth the upgrade if you're content with it.
I personally have a 2600k at 4.4Ghz and it performs like 4770k so there isn't much need to upgrade.
