So a friend of mine has a problem with his Sapphire R9 390. It's a newly built PC, about a month old. There weren't any issues till now.

His parts:
Intel i5 4690k
Sapphire R9 Nitro 390 w/backplate
ASRock Z97 PRO4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
G.Skill Ares Series 8GB DDR3
Corsair Force LS 120 GB SSD
Seagate Barracuda 3TB HDD
Cooler Master VSM 750W 80+ Gold PSU
Windows 10
Trendnet WiFi Adapter
Acer S220HQL Abd 21.5 LCD Monitor

So like I said no problems until today, he has been playing games on Steam perfectly fine. The issue today was that while he was playing NBA 2K16, he suddenly got a no signal message on his monitor and then just black screen. It wasn't asleep or anything like that. I restarted it and just regular PC use it's fine. I plugged in my own monitor which is the same model as his and tried running a game and still no signal. I updated the drivers and it worked with my monitor and then I plugged in his monitor, worked fine too. I tried a couple games to see if it would hold up. It initially worked and he played for maybe an hour or two before he shut down his computer. He just turned it on again to play NBA and after awhile he lost signal like the first time. Not sure how to troubleshoot this kind of problem, this hasn't happened to me before where I lose signal midway through usage and the only fix was to restart the PC.

Any help would be appreciated, I just want to be informed as possible and try out my options before I RMA the GPU since that seems to be the problem.
