One last decision for my upgrade. Help me choose.

So I have been debating for a few months about what kind of computer I want to have built. I was debating between the z170 or the x99. I have for the most part decided on the x99 because the computer has to last me 5 years or longer and the x99 has lots of lanes for sli. I will primarily be using it for gaming. I know cpu usage isn't big for gaming especially in the future with dx12 but I had a question that is the last thing I'm going to consider before making my choice regardless. I keep hearing that the 6700k has better single core performance than the 5930k and games don't typically use 6 cores yet. They might be in 5 years but that is purely hypothetical. The problem I am running across is that if I hypothetically overclock the 6700k from 4.0 to 4.4 and I was to OC a 5930k from 3.5 to 4.2 would it still have less performance than the 6700k for gaming? The thing is that I want to know full well what I am getting into and what my options are but I'm leaning toward getting a 1440p 144htz monitor and gaming with one of those cpus and a 980ti this year and then next year going 4k and moving on to an sli setup.

Honestly, in my opinion, unless you're screencasting/recording, the 6700K will cover most gamers' needs. The higher clock speeds will show greater gains for the current foreseeable future. Especially considering most games will be built around the mainstream chips and their higher clock/lower core count.

Many games and applications still use single core programming and even more use multi-core but not multi thread. You're more likely to see games start using hyperthreading before 6+ cores.

As for the PCI-E lanes, that really only applies for more than 2 GPUs IIRC. That said, after more than 2 GPUs, you're more likely to experience micro stutter and performance anomalies.

Good Z170/6700K and you should be all set. Use the money saved...

Overclocked wouldnt the 5930k have better performance even with the amount of cores currently being used? Also my thought process behind the lanes is that the new titan coming out this year is supposed to be twice as powerful as the Titan X so it will likely saturate 8x lanes so the z170 would bottle neck it if I decide to get two of those cards next year for 4k gaming at 100+ fps. This computer has to last me 5 years or longer and will be upgraded with the best gpus next year. Is there a fallacy in my logic somewhere?
