Need help with what to upgrade next

I have:
Intel i5-4690k 3.50ghz processor
GA Z97X-SLI Gigabyte motherboard
4GBx2 corsair vengeance ram 1866 mhz
GTX 650 Ti 1GB GPU

Obviously my GPU is the oldest but when I google different graphics cards it shows that a real performance jump doesnt come till the GTX 970s. I really don't know what to upgrade next or what to buy. I'm not rich so recommending a Titan X isnt gonna do much. thanks

You have pretty much answered your own question-the best viable upgrade to your system would be a new GPU. You can go for something like a 960 or 380x or if you have slightly more spending power a 970/390.

Your GTX 650 ti is close to a GTX 750 in performance. A GTX 960 or R9 380 would be a decent upgrade or for max performance at 1080P a GTX 970 or R9 390 would be the solution. Before buying one you need to be sure your power supply can handle an upgrade.

I am certain my PSU can handle it but how would I figure this out to make sure? I'm not sure how the psu works in the sense that do the standards work like MAX wattage spike or what not
