trouble is, most people will admonish the choice and tell the user to ditch an old out of date unsecure unsupported OS.

that is true but those users more than likely don't even remember xp so they post to upgrade since they can't answer the question.
plenty enough of us here who used it or still do who can be of help. i used it until win 7 had been out for about 2 years before upgrading to it as a dual boot option. like i am doing now with win 10 dual booted with win 7.

when transitioning to vista i was able to use a lot of vista drivers for xp as well for people who wanted to downgrade. also found xp drivers a lot by looking for the smaller pieces i needed. rather than looking at mobo maker for drivers for the lan, i would look at the actual lan chip used and go to that manufacturers site. they usually had xp drivers and they worked fine when the mobo maker did not have any.
