So I was using it like any other day...
and then it sounded like "tick...tick...tick...tick" then it wouldn't read anymore

can I still salvage the data inside somehow or what? because right now it wouldn't even be detected anymore by my laptop...

Solution
all an external drive is at the most basic level, is a standard hard drive(IDE,SATA) connected to a usb to sata adapter all in one unit.
take the hard drive out and it is a hard drive, capable of any use a hard drive can fulfill.
hence the "tear it out" we are hoping that the enclosure (case with built in adaptor) is the faulting unit here. if so the hard drive can be placed into another enclosure (like the one it came out of/a different PC) and it will be accessable

I would tear the drive out of the enclosure and intall it into a PC and try to read from it that way. Otherwise, it is dead and unless you pay money to a professional recovery firm, you might be out of luck.

Hopefully it is an issue with the USB interface or enclosure and the drive is actually fine.

tick, tick, tick, tick. sounds familiar. salvage? maybe.
can you remove the hard drive from the external case and install in a PC.
tick, tick, tick, for me has been a bad enclosure, putting the drive on SATA/IDE revived the drive. I suggest you try if you have the means.
laptop? is that your only PC? a USB to SATA/IDE adaptor will be handy/needed in that case.

Hi there KaiserPhantasma,

This could be caused by a faulty cable as well. So, it will not hurt to try using another one.

Keep in mind that taking the drive out of the enclosure will void the warranty, if under any.
In case you decide to go with that and the issue persists, you will need to contact a data recovery company if the data is crucial.

how do you "tear it out" of the drive? remove the case then what? not really that good in that level of DIYs but I did try to put an hard drive from my old PC (2000 ish) to an IDE enclosure and worked like an external... would that also do the same thing?

yes its just a laptop since I'm on a university and my PC...gaming PC is back at homes 500 miles away :(

so by tear apart you mean the same as transforming an old hard drive to an external drive?

"tear it out" colourful euphemism for: remove the drive from the external case and install into a pc, or other usb adapter

I need to make a correction its a Buffalo HD-PNTU3 : MiniStation™ Plus... dunno if these are easily repairable though...

what do you mean by "install it to a PC" this can be put in a SATA port? Haven't really spent a lot of time with PCs so you'll gonna have to forgive me on that one
