I have 2 PCs one is a HTPC/Big screen game PC and the other is the main PC for gaming.

Main is a i7 4790 with 770 gtx
HTPC is a i7 950 with Ati 7870

Im deciding between building a new PC completely and selling the HTPC. Or Buy a 980 or Fury put it in the main PC and move the 770 to the HTPC.

If i build a new PC to replace the Main i probally wouldnt get a 980 level card it would more likely be 970.

What would you do in this situation? You think the i7 950 still has some life in it and moving the 770 would add some life to 1080p gaming?

Or is replacing the Main PC with a skylake build and 970 for 1440p gaming the better option?

TIA

Solution
The 4790 is a great chip, unless you have a gripe with that platform, just replace the GPU with a the 980 and move the 770 to the htpc.

Skylake does not bring much to the table that Haswell does not already have. I suggest you review the skylake features and see if any of them are something you require and if they are worth the decrease in GPU performance that you will have to suffer (due to spending money in other areas).

both of those chips are still fine. yes the i7 950 is old, however for 1080p it will still suffice. selling it off would be a fine idea if you do not need it, but in terms of usefulness it still is very so. as for the 4790, it hardly even counts as old it still ties the 6700 on quite a few things. and where it is behind the difference is very hard to notice unless you really go looking for it. getting a fury or a 980 ti would be a great idea for that system. then you can easily play 1440p ad buttery FPS.

I'm running games like Fallout 4 on max settings, 1080p and have no issues, my CPU doesn't even get close to 100%. The 950 is still a very capable chip and unless there is a feature you want from a newer chipset, there is no good reason to replace it.
The Haswell CPU is still very good and just shy of new. At the very least, wait for Kaby Lake to consider upgrading, but considering that Kaby is a refresh or Skylake, like Devils canyon was to Haswell, I doubt there will be much performance increase.
