So my current computer's been overheating occasionally, and I've decided to buy three more case fans (currently have only one installed).

The only problem is, I can't for the life of me figure out how to know which fans/how many my motherboard can take. I have an ASrock H61M-DGS motherboard, and was wondering whether it will be able to support an additional three 3-pin fans? There is one currently installed, although I'm not actually sure how many pins it uses.

If not, are splitters/converters safe, or would they cause power issues? I've read that connecting them directly to the PSU is a bad idea, so I was trying to avoid that.

Pretty much all of my knowledge comes from a night spent googling and forum searching, so apologies if this is extremely basic.

From your MB http://www.asrock.com/mb/photo/H61M-DGS%28L1%29.jpg I can see there are only two fan_headers, one is for cpu ( next to the 4-pin 12V cpu power connector), other one is CHA_fan ( lower left-hand side corner).
If you want to add three fans, recommend to buy one Y fan splitter like http://www.moddiy.com/product_images/h/133/view_image__25656_zoom.jpg and other one you are better to connect to the PSU, because usually the fan_header on MB can only output about 1Amp, if you connect too many fans on it, you may overload it and kill the MB. Or buy the fan controller for the three fan. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007585&IsNodeId=1&Description=FAN%20CONTROLLER&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=30

Well, I'll have four case fans after I've added these three. So the best plan here would be to use a splitter for two of them, and attach the other two to the psu? Noise isn't really a concern, so if that's the only issue with attaching them to the PSU then I'll be fine. Although it does look like the fan slots are 4-pin, so would 3-pin fans still work if I connected them?

Okay thank you. And one last question, I noticed a 3-pin slot between the PCI slot and CPU separate to cha-fan and cpu-fan, called PWR_FAN1. As nothing's plugged into mine, am I also able to use this for fans, or is that something else?
