is this nice ?

Solution
wall>adaptor>UPS>adaptor>device? it would work but the adaptor between the UPS and the device should not be needed.

in a sence. that is a battery unit, whatever is plugged in is running on battery. surges will go into the battery not the device running on battery.
the surge only plug will not work as the ground is gone, but the battery side will protect against line surges

you can change the outlet, and add a ground to the one outlet if needs be. this will aloow the surge to work across all three plugs.
http://www.wikihow.com/Ground-an-Outlet
or you can use one of these: example only
http://www.amazon.com/Coleman-Cable-9901-Grounding-Converter/dp/B002HGUQYK%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q%26tag%3Dduckduckgo-d-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB002HGUQYK
this will plug into the two pin, it has a tab on the top screws into the outlet and grounds the plug. once this is plugged in the outlet will be three prong and grounded
