This upgrade will cost me around $300-400.. I have a Radeon HD 7770 1GB and an Athlon II x4 640 and the moment, and from what I can tell this is a significant upgrade, costing as much as I put into the original PC build.. My biggest concern is whether this is a worthwhile investment or not.

if he choose that route he should buy a new cooler eg "COOLERMASTER HYPER 212 EVO", HE MUST OVERCLOCK and be ready to troubleshoot.

Well the GPU can last quite a long time, its an r9 390 after all, good gpu. The CPU fx8350 should be able to push 2 years as well, same as any intel CPU you get for the same budget (even lower since you have to get a motherboard as well). Personally I would go just for a GPU and see how well games run. If you are satisfied with the performance you can keep your CPU for a little longer till your budget is better.

lol, I have exactly 8320 + r9 290 and since the newest driver update like a week ago I always get BSOD after Windows logo and can't boot into Normal mode. I put my old Radeon 4850 HD and BSOD is gone, I'm so frustrated with this...

your North Bridge: AMD 760G may limit your oc capabilities not a good chipset,is also hot and unstable on higher(>2200mhz) NorthBridge Frequency,HT Link frequency you may need to over voltage. that matters alot because your 8320,8350 may degrade if operational temp is >60c.

disable cool and quite from bios that will disable cpu speed stepping this may be your fix.

I had to switch over to Photon Browser. Chrome wouldn't let me see the "reply to" link. Weird. Are you saying that they would last literally that long, as in that long before they burn out, or figuratively as in before they are obsolete?

The 960g is NOT a good board for a 125w cpu. Even at stock settings the weak vrms are prone to throttle the cpu. An 8320e or 8370e would be a better option as its only 95w. With a 290 or a 390 youll need to make sure your psu can handle it. You'll want a good quality 620w or larger unit.

Most 760/970 chipset AMD motherboards are problematic with 125w TDP processors like FX-8350. Like said above, the FX-6300/8320e or lower are much more suitable optios for motherboards like that. These are likely to work without performance holding back.

my r9 290 has been working perfectly good for almost 2 yrs, so it's not low wattage. I'm pretty sure it's something to do with the drivers, when I uninstall them it works again, no BSOD until windows autoinstalls them, colors and everything are good so it's not burned out. for 15+ yrs never had such a problem.
