Hello,

I'm trying to install a intel i7 4790K into a Asus Z87-K, which isn't going according to plan. After reading multiple solutions (http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2321161/4790k-devils-canyon-asus-z87-motherboard.html?xtor=EREC-8889) it still doesn't want to boot with the i7-4790k. I stil have my old processor (i5-4440) which i used to update the bios to the latest version (1402), but still it doesn't want to boot, post or give me any video output at all when I try the i7-4790K. According to the Asus support website, the motherboard does support the 4th generation intel proccesors DC, and according to the bios update 1302, It tells that they added support for the i7-4790K specific. As far as my knowledge goes I've tried everything I could think of. I tested the i7-4790K on a motherboard which support It and it does run, so the processor isn't defect.

I'm hoping someone could give me an explanation to this issue, my thanks in advance!

List of hardware:
intel i7-4790K
Asus Z87-K
2x Corsair CMX8GX3M2A1333C9
MSI N760 (GTX 760 2GB)
Corsair CX750M

not your board but interesting ?

''I got my Asus Z87-Deluxe motherboard to post and boot up perfectly using the Asus 2103 Bios firmware. Key wording is you "must" use the Asus Flashback utility and NOT EZ Flash2 which is what I did. I spent over 47 hours (on and off) before I gave up and emailed Asus support. If you use EZ Flash2, one of 3 firmware utilities put forth by Asus, it does a incomplete flash. Even though cpuz will display the correct bios name it is a incomplete firmware upgrade which is what happened with me

so far all I can see is asus has you do all this hoop jumping to do something that should be simple - crazy

I used the EZ flash. The bios updater didn't work for me as It required the Intel(R) Management Engine Interface (even though I installed the most recent version).

Is there an yellow mark in Device Manager?

When I use EZ flash to update the BIOS, it does say that the update was successfully and it shows that the current driver is installed. My experience with the more technical aspect of motherboards is limited, or at the very least small. To my logic, the most recent update has been installed on the motherboard and it should work. I have read about flashback, but it seems this motherboard doesn't support this function. So I can't see the difference between updating through bios or any update tool.

You're right, it should be something simple. And it was... the motherboard now works with the i7-4790K. In the end I gave it another shot at the "BIOS updater for New 4th Gen Intel Core Processors" from Asus. Which at the time wouldn't run because of the requirement of intel (IME) management engine interface (of which i had installed the most recent version). After finding the right IME, the updater from Asus was able to update. After installation and a reboot, the motherboard showed that the most recent version was installed (although I was still unsure because of the incomplete flash possibility). Next i swapped the cpu's and the finally gave me a post! Still can't get my head around the idea that this updater worked and the EZ-flash doesn't. It does however join you discovery on the artikel you posted. But I'm just happy it's finally working after a lot of hoop jumping.

Thank you so much for the help you have given :)

Good point! I installed version 9.5.15.1730 for Intel Destop Boards (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/search?keyword=intel+management+engine).

sad thing is these are part of the reasons why my ''last'' 3 asus's were my last asus's - I think there more into hype then quality and support these days and not the same asus I grew up with anymore ... here you are fooling with all this when you should be enjoying your build

I agree, although i don't mind fooling around a bit because it helps me to better understand it. But like you said, you shouldn't have to be fooling around to get something simple to work. Even though it's probably a bit more complicated than it sound I imagine. But the support from Asus was far from helpful. When calling there costumer support line for a question on motherboard, they direct you though to there website to register and wait a max. of 2 days before they reply. It's shameful that you can't just call and ask for technical support when you need it. Thankfully there is Tomshardware, and their experts! :D

should be if you all ready have a supported chip is down load the bios you need and set up on a pen drive the reboot to bios flash as required to the bios you need for the unsupported chip and install whats now the new supported chip on the updated bios ? as in just do a bios flash as normal install new chip that required it support ?? my z87 don't have any thing like that to update the bios for any chip out side normal practice ??

best part is you got it up and going and I guess that's what counts in the end

This thread just saved me!
just bought a new processor off eBay and I thought it was faulty until I tried the 'BIOS updater for New 4th Gen Intel Core Processors' updater - never thought for a second that the EZ Updater tool was bugged!

Thanks!

Asus should really make more of an effort to mention this on their mobo support page.
