- disc utility won't repair - says stopped repairing disk - Catalog file entry not found for extent The volume could not be verified completely. File system check exit code is 8. Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required. Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.

can anyone suggest if it possible to access data on hard another way please?

Welcome to the community, fredddie!

These errors sound pretty concerning as they might indicate that the external HDD has failed. I'd advise you to try plugging it to a different iMac or MacBook to check if you'd be able to access your files from there. I'd also try using the command-line utility that could help you verify and repair a disk as well. You should also try using the Disk Utility in Safe Mode.
If you can successfully access your files from there, make sure you do a backup and have your files copied to, at least, one more location/storage device. This is the best way to prevent any potential data loss.

Good luck!
