Hello,

as the title suggests, I'm trying to re-purpose an old desktop by installing Ubuntu (which I've done). - It's got 2gb memory (happy with that).

The kicker is finding a decent place to buy graphics cards with HDMI out on the cheap.

- I've scoured E-Bay, Amazon, Gumtree and have had no luck.

When you consider the price of a Raspberry Pi with HDMI out capabilities, I really feel like in order to achieve HDMI out on an old desktop I shouldn't have to spend much?

I thought I'd found my gold mine when I was looking at the Cex website recently but despite the photo (in which the model had an HDMI port), I received the correct model (An Nvidia 8400 GS) except, with DVI output only.

The card I bought cost £5, plus £2.50 postage, so I was initially chuffed to say the least....Followed by the inevitable disappointment of realising that I don't have the luxury of combined Audio and HD video support.

I've gone so far as to try using a VGA to HDMI converter, which has the 3.5 mm audio jack...This didn't work.

I've also looked at motherboards that come with HDMI output on board...Too expensive.

So I'm starting to feel like I'm fighting a losing battle.

Can anyone please, please give any advice as to where I should look?

Much appreciated!

Thanks,

Robin.

Solution
If all you need is HDMI out (for non-gaming reasons), then search ebay for the GT 610. I saw one there with a starting bid of $0.99 and another one currently at $10.04.

If gaming performance is no problem, buy the cheapest GPU you can find.

A GTX 750 might be perfect for your needs.

Has no extra power requirements, it's small, quiet and is generally a very good value GPU.

It will even be able to do a little bit of light gaming if you were into that.

or an even cheaper option..

If your budget dosn't allow for a new GPU, you could try a used GPU, or look into a cheap 'KVM Switch'
