Basically I'm looking for a painstakingly simple step-by-step tutorial for a simple-minded individual such as myself, and I haven't found one. (Really, I've looked!) (Granted, there are how-to's on some of these aspects, but I desire the entire rigamarole.)

Compared to building the computer (my first), this feels like brain surgery, and I am on the verge of paying someone else to. Maybe that's what you'd recommend?

Thanks for any support!

I have:
Corsair H60
Intel i5 6600k
Gigabyte Z170 Gaming 7 mobo
Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound

PS. The reason I'm even doing this is because my pc will only post when memory is in single channel configuration, not in dual. Should I maybe just be satisfied with that, knowing that I will probably never increase my RAM from 2x8 to 4x8 DIMMS?

Solution
The memory should be in dual channel mode if you have all 4 slots populated or matching color slots populated. If dual channel memory mode is not activated, there may be something wrong with the board.

The pump is held on to the board with those 4 thumb screws you see surrounding the socket. Loosen them completely and remove the pump. (The silver frame is a a loose bracket held to the pump with magnets. It may come apart. No big deal) Use some thing like isopropyl alcohol or Arctic Cleaner to remove the old TIM from both surfaces...

Hang the pump out of the way.

Raise the locking lever on the socket and open the pressure plate to expose the CPU. Lift it out by the edges so as not to touch the under side. Do your inspection. Repeat the above in reverse to put everything back together.
It may help to watch a video of installing the H60 so you can see what the assemble is like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBoCzJrxtBM
