Cannot install x64

I bought an Optiplex 755 SFF with Vista Business installed. I then bought a Vista Business disc with x86 and x64. Even after formatting, x86 installs without a choice given.

Does it matter that I have no boot manager?

Warning heeded.

I ran upgrade advisor. It cleared my 755 for x64.

I've had no trouble with Vista thanks to having enough RAM and a 4-core, but I acknowledge that others have had a lot of trouble.

It may be an issue of what you 'bought'. Vista has not been available for sale in the retail space for quite a while.

It could also be that sure...... Microsoft identifies your hardware as compatible with x64 but it is Dell's BIOS and they are not supporting x64 for the 755. I have C2D's from that era running x64 OS's. The hardware is capable but not while under Dell's umbrella, for that model.

For that 755:

As to why it did not work? No idea.

The PC came from a firm of accountants and the disc is a Microsoft one. The above tech sheet shows that Vista Business x64 might be pre-installed. Mine had x86. I found somewhere saying that some PC builders lock a system to one or the other.

I'm trying Dell support but without much luck so far.

Microsoft's upgrade adviser can say whatever it wants. Dell holds the keys. To put it another way.... If you pulled the CPU and RAM off of that motherboard and put them into a generic or 3rd party motherboard for that socket..... you would be able to install an x64 bit OS. You just can't do it on Dell's motherboard.

It is in Dell's manual for the 755, just as USAFRet posted. Specifically, page 9 of the Dell Optiplex 755 User Manual.

You mean the page where it shows the factory shopping options, which include Vista Business x64? I'm not sure what you are seeing, but I don't see any evidence of problem on page 9. To the contrary, it shows factory 64 bit configurations.

Actually, I did not see that.

I do have an Optiplex 745 here with original Vista Business CoA that had the same issue though. Only thing I can think of is to go flash the BIOS. Dell is hosting Vista Business x64 drivers on their site for the 755, including (2) BIOS updates. What else could possibly stop the install unless the content disc is not authentic? I work for a MRR part-time and have never seen an OS disc that contained both x86 and x64 versions of the OS on a single disc. Not saying they don't exist but they certainly are not distributed to us.
