when I insert the twisted together speaker wire into my ONKYO AV receiver wire nut and tighten the nut, the wire stays loose. What is the problem?

Solution
if using bare wire with binding post type connectors, there are holes drilled perpendicular to the bolt (sideways) which are where you insert the wire and then tighten the nut down on them. the parallel hole (through hole) is used for bananna clip connectors. it is also possible on some binding posts to use a end connector to lock the nut down on instead.

Where are you inserting the wire exactly ??

Loosen the nut off & you should find a hole running vertically all the way through the bolt.
Strip the speaker wire a good inch or more & insert it into the top of the hole so its poking out of the bottom & tighten the nut all the way up.
