A 3tb crapped out on me and I lost a nice movie collection , then upgraded my htpc (and only pc) to a mini itx i5 build (to look nice by the tv) but that has no 3.5" drive bays So I picked up a used 8 bay nas and would like budget friendly options on how I should set it up initially. I'm thinking about probably either 4x1tb or 3x2tb, but I have two or three good 1tb drives that I could add to a couple purchased drives and have raid options. Not to say I got to raid, but I'd like the option to either initially or in the future. And I can't spend $400 on drives kinda defeats my cord cutting when I replace my cable bill with $600 htpcs and a fist full of high cap nas drives.

I would like to end up with 4 drives I would like to spend around 1-200$, and like the best transfers I can get.
Cheaply.!!!

Solution
look for offers, but the nas aware drives will be a better bet, like WD reds or segate Nas drives. 1TB's I wouldn't bother with because for maybe 30% more you can get 100% storage with a 2TB drive.

So I will be looking at connecting nas directly to htpc via usb 3.0 would hopefully yield better results, but 100mbps wouldn't be too bad I suppose. I wonder how long of a run I could do with a usb 3.0 cable. Any thoughts on cut rate storage, leaning forwards just a few 1tb drives since they are cheap, and I already have a couple.
