My hard drive is a Toshiba DT01ACA100 1TB hard drive and I bought a Orico 3.5" hard drive enclosure http://www.ebay.com/itm/ORICO-3588US3-BK-Tool-Free-USB-3-0-to-SATA-External-Hard-Drive-Enclosure-for-3-5-/381482380044 so I can use all my previous data on my new PC. In tutorials, everyone else's hard drive is flat but mine is bulky. Here are photos of it: https://digitalpromo.co.uk/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/1024x780/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/D/T/DT01ACA100_lg.JPG http://www.mwave.com/mwave/specHR/images/AA78346c.jpg It fits in the enclosure but the grey plastic around the gold things is preventing me from plugging the gold things where they're supposed to go in the enclosure. I have no idea what to do now. How do I connect this? Also, I'm reading about the drive needing to be formatted before I can use it with my new PC... I have my data on it so I don't want to erase everything, how can I keep that from happening? Thank you.

That enclosure should work with your drive, it has a standard SATA connection. Is this what it looks like when you try to insert the drive? http://img.alibaba.com/img/pb/036/446/852/852446036_222.jpg

You shouldn't need to format it just to use it as an external drive, once you get it connected properly it should show up as another hard drive when you plug it into the computer and you should see all your files. If you wanted to install Windows on it then you would probably need to format but it doesn't sound like that is what you are trying to do.
Hey there, PennyLane!

I'd strongly recommend you to backup the data from that internal HDD somewhere else before putting it in the enclosure. I'd also recommend you to use a different HDD enclosure since this one is not fitting the HDD properly. The SATA and power connectors are exactly as they should be, so you shouldn't tamper with the internal drive physically.
You should also keep in mind that most HDD enclosures are configured with different LBAs, that's why they require you to format the drive in order to use it. If you intend to use this drive as a backup, make sure you have the data safe and sound somewhere else, then reformat it through the enclosure and copy it back to the now external HDD.

Hope this helps. Good luck! :)

Thanks everyone! BadAsAl, it looks just like that but the connector part on my hard drive is blocked by gray plastic. Still trying to fix it myself before checking back here, I carefully peeled the gray plastic obstruction off and that left the gold prongs sticking out perfectly fine. I'm just nervous about breaking them when inserting them into the enclosure dock(?) because there are gold prongs in there already. I'll try to connect it once more and if it doesn't work or I get worried I'm going to mess it up, I'll take this in to a local PC repair shop. But not the Geek Squad because I called a few days ago and they angrily demanded $40.00 just to plug this thing into my enclosure for me! Thanks for your help. :)

Edit: I tried yet again and it worked! I had to get creative with the sponge included with the enclosure but it's working now and I can access my data! I can't wait to get back to my old tasks and entertainment tomorrow. Thank you so much!
