Internet speed fast through modem but 1/5th through modem (wired) - Netgear r8000

I have a Surfboard 6183 modem and a Netgear r8000 router with my desktop connected to the router with Cat6 wire. All wiring in fact is either CAT5e or CAT6. Connected directly to my modem I can get 200+ mpbs. Connected through the router however, I can only get 77 mbps.

Why am I slowing down drastically when putting the router in between? Are there settings I need to adjust on the router to fix this?

Any help and troubleshooting would be much appreciated.

Background:
I initially had Time Warner Ultimate 50 (50/5 mbps) but they upgraded to Ultimate 300 (300/20 mbps) at which time I upgraded my modem to accommodate the higher speeds. I hadn't been able to get my download speeds on my desktop past 58 mpbs until I reset the router today and get up to 77 mbps. Still far short of the 300 mbps that my router is getting from the modem (the Netgear router page has a speedtest and that gets me 300/15).

Notes:
1. All wireless connections are turned off.
2. No other programs that would use bandwidth are on.
3. The desktop is WIRED.
4. IPv6 is disabled (I don't know what this is but it was brought up in some other thread)

Check to make sure it's connected at gigabit speeds, it looks like it might be running at 100mbps. Control Panel->Network and Internet->Network and Sharing Center. Click the name of the connection next to "Connections" it should be something like "Ethernet". Then check where it says speed. If it is running at 100mbps the most common issues are that the Ethernet controller is only 100mbps, bad cables or the switch/router you're connected to is only 100mbps or possibly just a really bad one. Also make sure you're not daisy-chaining the connection through something like an IP phone.

My connections go like this:
Modem > Router > Desktop and Gigabit Switch... The Gigabit Switch then daisy chains to multiple other devices and another switch which is connected to devices downstairs. But all the testing I'm doing is on the Desktop connected directly to the router.

The "Speed" in Network and Sharing shows "1.0 Gbps"
My motherboard is an Asrock Z77 Extreme4

I've tested multiple cables between the Modem/Router and the Router/Desktop. Cables marked 5e or 6 still don't fix the issue. Desktop speedtest still maxes at 80 Mbps down.

Any suggestions?

Additionally. I want to switch to AT&T gigapower with gigabit advertised download. However, if I can't get the 300 to work with TWC, switching is not my priority.
