Alright so this is my first PC build so I am very new to this. I have a GTX 970 and I am having issues where my GPU Clock is spiking to MAX as soon as I open any kind of game on my pc. Temperatures and everything go way up as well. I have attatched some pictures that show what im talking about because im an idiot and dont know how to explain all this. -Noob-

Specsv2_zpsi5nvawd1.png

Why is it at 104% This is when nothing is running...

SPECS%20ScrnShot_zpsfctniq9u.png

The game im playing is ARK:Survival with High gfx settings.

Also, My CPU Drops to 29% Exactly every two or three min. while i am playing the game. It gets very laggy when it drops to the 29% and spikes back up to around 60% and the game becomes playable again. This only last for 10-20 seconds.

Also, Here are the rest of my specs

AMD Octa-core FX-9590 4.7GHz

Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120mm PWM Fan

ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 32GB

Solution
yes... the credit card part is not necessary... in fact it may have caused the problem. To do it correctly, you're supposed to put a pea-sized dot on it and just put the cooler over it(and screw it in ofc). Spreading it with a card will decrease its thickness and the cooler might not have complete contact with the paste. Re-do it and post the results here.

also, the gpu will be used to render in game content so of course it will start working hard. Naturally this would output more heat so the temperature would go up. The gpu boost technology i mentioned earlier is basically the gpu boosting its clock speed so that it will work harder given that its temperature is low enough. The ram usage will increase too since it will start buffering frames into its integrated ram. Finally your cpu will be spiking as some parts of the game will be loaded only when you enter a particular area, making you pc "lag" but in reality it's just accessing game files to load.

Do not worry about anything as this is all normal... Mine is a 980Ti and be assured that mine runs a lot hotter than your 970(mine at full load is ~84C) and still it's working 100% at that temperature.

Now that is a strange thing... But is it causing any problems? And what is your screen resolution(or just provide me your monitor model)?

In that case it shouldn't be a graphics card problem. You may have a thermal throttling issue. Did you apply the thermal paste properly(there are tutorials on youtube, you should check them and see if you did something wrong)?

I have questioned myself if i did the thermal paste correctly... I have the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler which was a pain in the ass to install from the start... I did watch one video and had gotten some tips from some friends... I dont understand how a paste would cause this though...

Hrmm I applied a small layer and covered the cooling uniit area used a "credit card" piece of plastic to disperse the paste. How does one mess that up??

>_<

...I am NOT looking forward to re-installing this cooling unit. Fml.

Thank you. Going to work on it now and will post when its back up and running. Thank you for your time! Much appreciated!

This is after i re-did the thermal paste and ran around ARK:Survival for a few min. I still feel like my GPU is running kinda hot?? 64 degrees? No CPU Drops though. Im going to try it on Day z now since that game is CPU intensiive and see if i notice a difference

64 degrees under load is cool

you should only worry when temps start going over 80

I imagine the hyper 212 is no where near enough to keep the 9590 under control temps wise, and that is where your issues are most likely coming from

that mobo is suffering with that cpu, REALLY need a good 990fx with that hog

monitor cpu temps with amd overdrive

I played some Day Z (Again, CPU Intensive game) I also ran it while doing a test stream on twitch. I noticed several differences... For one under my CPU performance percentage in my task manager when play is averaging around 35-40% compared to the 60-65% it was running prior. My CPU Temp stayed at a consitant 35-40 degrees C and I did bump up my GPUs Fan a little bit and my GPU was running at about 40 degrees-45. Also, I ran around in and out of housing, shot at some zombies tried low pop and super high pop servers and my CPU did not drop and lag like it was.. Hoping this is a permanent fix to this issue.

Haha like I said the credit card part really shouldnt be there... Every cpu heatsink has different contact areas so restricting them to a single thickness of paste isnt a good idea... The gpu temps is really normal, for me my 980Ti can get up to 84C on benchmarks. No worries and I'm really glad I have helped you :)

1. Ditch Asus GPU boost, I have the same card and use MSI's. I do not like Asus's settings. Use custom fan settings, and voltages. My card hardly even goes over 55 c. (I'm real old school when it come to voltages IE less is best.)
2. Ark Survival, I have that game, I have not played it in about 3 months. At the time it was optimized poorly. I've seen this complaint before, Use DX10 instead of DX11 the game runs smoother and the card runs cooler.
3. cap you frame rate at vsinc with any game, that all you need and the GPU is not as stressed.

Not necessary. The card is working normally so just let it be.
