Hey guys, I'm not much of a parts guy and wanted opinions on the parts list I've put together. Budget is 400-700.

- HyperX FURY 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2133 (PC4 17000) Desktop Memory Model HX421C14FBK2/16
- Rosewill Quark-550, Quark Series 550W Full Modular Power Supply, 80Plus Platinum Certified
- Crucial BX200 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CT240BX200SSD1
- DIYPC Cuboid-B Black Aluminum / Steel MicroATX Mid Tower Computer Case Standard ATX / PS II
- Intel Xeon E3-1230 v5 SkyLake 3.4 GHz LGA 1151 80W BX80662E31230V5 Server Processor (spec sheet)
- ASUS Z170M-PLUS LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
- LP4 to 2 SATA Internal Power Splitter Cable

I already have a few WD green HDDs for storage; I'm mostly concerned with making sure the memory works with the CPU, and the CPU will work with the mobo (sockets are right, but I was reading about some incompatibilities between mobo BIOS versions and Xeon processors). Also I'm having some difficulty deciding between the I5-6600k, Xeon E3-1230, and Xeon E3-1245 processors. I like the 1230, it's the lowest end processor that supports hyperthreading; but this will be a media server too, so the 1245's builtin support for encoding/decoding video codecs might be a big performance increase? Would this performance increase even translate into virtual environments though?

Am I picking anything stupid, or have a better recommendation?

With that Xeon E3 v5 chip you won't be able to use a consumer chipset motherboard (H170 / H110 / Z170). For Skylake you would be looking at something like the build below...

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1230 V5 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($247.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X150-PLUS WS ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($168.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory ($69.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Crucial BX200 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($63.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Case: Corsair 300R ATX Mid Tower Case ($69.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $620.95

Or you can look to the prior generation Xeon (Haswell Refresh) for less cost. Still offers great performance...
