I recently upgraded my home PC. I mainly game, but I am soon heading for college where I may need a CPU with capability in multithreaded work loads. I am concerned though because my FPS in most of my games has diminished.
My previous system consisted of: Intel i5 4690k @ Stock speeds, ASUS Maximus Hero VII Motherboard, G. Skill 8GB 1866Mhz RAM, and a GTX 980 from EVGA.
My new system is: i7 5820k, ASUS Rampage V Extreme, 16GB 3000Mhz Corsair Vengeance LPX, and the same GTX 980 from EVGA.
I play Battlefield 4, Grand Theft Auto V, Crysis 3, Star Wars Battlefront, along with a few others. my most notable performance drop is on Battlefield 4 ,map Siege of Shanghai, near the skyscraper that can be destroyed. On the side with the fountain and the burning car I get in the 60s and have even seen 40s-50s there. I run BF4 at 1080p 125% resolution scale, ultra settings, MSAA on. Every where else on the map I get roughly 10 FPS less than what I did before.
I know that fast 4 core CPUs are best for gaming. I ran CPU-Z's benchmark and according to it, if I ran my CPU at 4.5Ghz I near matched the single core performance of an i7 6700k.
temps and everything are fine. My GPU is OCed to 1485Mhz I believe and +450Mhz on the VRAM. The OC on the GPU is the only OC that has delivered significant FPS gain.
Two more things to say. My CPU ulitization is usually 20s-30s and sometimes 40s in games. Also I accidently bought a 2x8 set of RAM rather than 4x4. Could that be the problem? I have swapped the board and GPU with no change. I would guess CPU is fine but I am not expert.
Help me Tomshardware...you're my only hope.
