My current computer has a 1tb hard drive. But on this computer i have an OEM copy of windows 7. I just ordered a new motherboard/processor. I want to use this hard drive with new motherboard and processor. I plan on formatting my hard drive before i receive the parts. Once i get the parts i am going to put the hard drive in the new pc and install a retail copy of windows that i recently bought. Will i encounter any problems? Also i am going to put a 500gb hard drive is the OEM pc just to have around in case of problems and such. Will swapping hard drives effect the windows 7 licence? Im not trying to copy my OEM i just want to swap hard drives between new motherboard and processor. And then reinstall windows OEM on the 500gb hard drive on the original computer.

As long as you have two licenses for two computers, moving drives will not be an issue, but technically the OEM license has to stay with the motherboard it was installed on. So you can use the hard drive it was on in the new system and install a clean Windows on it with a new license and then use the OEM key on the original motherboard if you want to set up another computer with that.

In real world situations, MS support often will activate an OEM license on a changed motherboard but that is most often when a repair is done. Depends on who you talk to and how nice you are.

Thanks for the quick answer. I contacted Microsoft and the person i talked to seemed to have no idea what i was talking about. I tried making it as clear as possible considering the lack of knowledge i have on the subject. Thanks again
