When i installed windows 7 professional on my eMachine W5243,several days ago, I inadvertantly forgot to remove the USB connector. Windows 7 pro 'found' the all in one and and went ahead and installed it.In otherwords, i didn't have to use the install disc that came with the device. today, though, when i tried to scan something got message that i should try toscan using the computer, and not the scan menu on the printer.
today i want to install an SSD in this pc. I am in a dilemma now:
1. should i do a fresh install of Windows 7, and reinstall the All In one using the latest
updated drivers,
2. should I un-install the all in one from the computer. then migrate or clone the hardrive to the SSD, then reinstall the All In One As i have never had a printer installed using just Windows, i don't know how to uninstall the all In one..i have an option on the shortcut menu to remove the device.
what is wierd is that the printer is not listed on the start menu, but is listed under Programs
under the Cdive in the dirctory.
i appreciate any advice recommendations offered.

Solution
1. Clean install of the OS on the new SSD is recommended.
2. Install of the specific drivers for the printer is recommended.
What Windows will install is the basic drivers to make it print. If you want to use all the printer specific functions (scan menu), you need to install its own driver.

Solution
Installing the SSD makes all other questions irrelevant. Here's what to do.

1. Check with hardware sites to see if any updates are available and save to something (i.e. USB, DVD, external HD) you will have access to.

2. Install Win 7 to the SSD while the ethernet cable and the HD Data cable is unplugged.

3. Install all original hardware / accessory drivers / utilities that ya want from original CDs / DVDs.... install any updated versions that ya found in Step 1... the reason ya install the originals and then do it again w/ the newer ones is that oft the originals have license keys and the updates don't.

4. Turn off hardware driver updates in Windows Update:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/82137-drivers-turn-off-automatic-driver-installation.html

5. Set Windows Update to check for updates but let me choose whether to install them

7. Connect the ethernet cable and tell Windows update to see what is available (do not install as yet)

8. If you don't want all the Windows 10 tracking and other stuff, being installed on your machine, look for the following KB's in the suggested / optional update lists, then right click on them and select hide:

KB3068708 - Described as "This update introduces the Diagnostics and Telemetry tracking service to existing devices. By applying this service, you can add benefits from the latest version of Windows to systems that have not yet upgraded. The update also supports applications that are subscribed to Visual Studio Application Insights."

KB3075249 - Described as "This article describes an update that adds telemetry points to consent.exe in Windows 8.1 Windows RT 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1." Consent.exe is the User Account Control (UAC) feature that asks your approval for disk access.

KB3080149 - Described as "This package updates the Diagnostics and Telemetry tracking service to existing devices. This service provides benefits from the latest version of Windows to systems that have not yet upgraded. The update also supports applications that are subscribed to Visual Studio Application Insights."

KB3123862 - This update adds capabilities to some computers that lets users easily learn about Windows 10 or start an upgrade to Windows 10. Before you install this update, see the Prerequisites section. For more information about Windows 10, see Windows 10.

KB 3035583 - According to Microsoft, this update enables "additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications when new updates are available".

KB 2952664 - Labeled a compatibility upgrade for upgrading Windows 7, its purpose is to "make improvements to the current operating system in order to ease the upgrade experience to the latest version of Windows".

KB 2976978 - A compatibility update for Windows 8.1 and Windows 8 which "performs diagnostics on the Windows system [..] to determine whether compatibility issues may be encountered when the latest Windows operating system is installed.

KB 3021917 - Does the same as KB 2976978 but on Windows 7.

KB 3044374 - This update for Windows 8.1 enables systems to upgrade from the current operating system to a later version of Windows.

KB 2990214 . Does the same as KB 3044374 but on Windows 7.

KB 3022345 - Update to enable the Diagnostics Tracking Service in Windows (Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8

9. Again, if you don't want all the Win 10 stuff, install GWX Control panel and set it up as described here (highly recommended):
http://blog.ultimateoutsider.com/2015/08/using-gwx-stopper-to-permanently-remove.html

10. You will have to run Windows Update quite a few times to get all the needed updates; again Windows will keep trying to reinstall all the tracking and Win 10 files. Alternately you can just run WU over and over again till it says 'no mas" and then uninstall those KBs above.

11. Shut down and reconnect HD data cable. When ya sure you are all comfy, delete the old Windows files, however....

12. I expect you have all your old programs installed in C:\Program Files ... do not delete these unless you don't want them there any more. Install the programs over themselves on the HD if that's where you want to keep them.. This will retain any licenses or customizations, tool bars whatever.

13. If you want them on the SDSD, then copy paste the program folder from the HD to the SSD before installing on top as above.

thank you both for your advice and recommendations. The reson I'm installing the SSD on the pc is that the \pc won't support Windows 10 due to its graphics card, and it is running slow as it only has one logical process , running at 2.4 or 2.8 GHz. I will do the fresh install as recommended and will keep a look out for those specific updates.

thank you so much for your advice. I did a fresh install of the Windows 7 in the SSD. I used the software that came with the All In One printer, and both were successfully installed. the only thing I could not do was get access to yahoo.com and Mozilla -firefox ,because Microsoft is blocking them from being downloaded.they're claiming that the two web sites have security problems. Internet Explorer is not a secure web site, but both Yahoo and Firefox are.
I think I will notify the FCC about this.

I have zero problem with Firefox, either getting or using, on any MS platform in the house.
