I see I also had to download it. Newer systems use Hyper-V now so I'm not sure it that still works. UEFI could also complicate matters. I recall some seemed to indicate the order of setup mattered but I installed XP Mode after initial setup.
It doesn't relate to your issue yet but there are Virtual PC versions of 2004, 2007 and later. WindowsXPMode_N_en-us vs WindowsXPMode_en_us depend on your location.
I can't find any problems I encountered but my system was older.

Hi

There are official Microsoft Virtual PC versions of which 2007 is free and works on XP or 7

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=4580

You then install (most) operating systems (Windows or otherwise) which means you need to get a licensed XP CD and install it on a virtual hard drive, then install a special driver set (provided)

[I have virtual disks with Windows 3.11 up to XP and Linux]

Win 7 Pro and ultimate came with the right to download Microsoft virtual XP which includes a free licence for XP and a ready built XP image

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/install-and-use-windows-xp-mode-in-windows-7

are you confusing these two seperate products?

Thanks for the responses Gearup Virtuallization is on in BIOS of that i am sure. Barnes, i am new to the whole virtual pc thing read about in class. And thought it would be good practice to load up some old prorgrams from the old pc i dug out the closet. And from what i read windows 7 should be able to run windows XP in virtualization for free and thought i would give it a shot.

Went to this link for Windows virtual pc since from what i found out i needed this.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3702

And then this for XP mode and now starting to think i got something confused

If you need an OS other than XP then that can be installed in Virtual PC. The original would be a little more secure but otherwise less desirable. XP Mode provides the virtual machine environment and OS. Graphics emulation is used so that is limiting but basic programs like office work great.
