Do I need an aftermarket CPU cooler?

Hi guys,

I recently got a new GTX980Ti for my system and I'm currently running a stock i5-4690 @ 3.5GHz with a stock Intel cooler, and I've noticed when playing Ark Survival Evolved, my CPU package temps are hitting averages of 85 degrees Celsius, reaching a top of nearly 100 degrees..
Is this a safe temp for that chip? I feel it's super high, it's a hella old cooler also, should I get an AIO cooler? I also have a H440 case with stock 120's in the front with two 140 SpectrePro's in the rear and top exhausting, if that helps.

Solution
Considering that you're running with some pretty high end stuff like the GTX 980ti, i'd look to that to blame for the ambient temp increases. An AIO cooler would highly benefit your build from my point of view. something like the NZXT Kraken x61 is an absolute beast if you top mount it on that case. Another less expensive option would be the Corsair h100i series which is also quite good.

Are you sure those temperatures are right? What program are you using to read them? I would say that you don't need an aftermarket cooler but if those temps are correct then you definitely do.

SemperHaze ,

When it comes to cpu cooling, always ditch the cooler that comes with the OEM cpu package as soon as you can.

Simply there the bare minimum size for thermal absorption and extraction that your cpu generates in heat under heavy cpu usage or calculations the cpu is running.

Buy an after market cooler with more mass, bigger in size without question SemperHaze.
85c to 100c is not good for the cpu. it`s probably thermal throttling at 100c

No doubt about it buy a good after market cpu cooler or a water cooling AIO solution if space is a problem to cool the cpu.

I'm using OpenHardwareMonitor at the moment but it seems to be somewhat inconsistent, is there a more reliable monitoring program around?
It seems to only get very hot during full Ark SE load also, I can really feel the heat exhausting from the back, under any normal load it seems to be 50-60c

I have noticed some throttling and my multi tasking is severely slow when running the game, I dont want to melt my chip xD It's so weird that it only heats up when playing this one game, perhaps it's just super CPU intensive
