So, a friend of mine has this question which i'm not sure of the answer... He has a slot of him rams covered due to a monster air cooler and he wants to expand hist total ram size to 16GB.

He currently has 4x2 DD3@1600 dual channel, if he adds a single 8GB Stick to total 16GB, will still be running in dual channel mode?

What mobo and CPU? What are model #s of the DRAM? If a fairly current mobo, Yes . Intel has, and has had, Flex Mode for a few years now, you can place an 8GB stick in channel A and 2 4GB sticks in channel B and run all 16 in dual channel. AMD has their own version of flex in many/most of their more current mobos, more on this in my DDR3 FAQs and Fiction article - FAQs, item 7, here:

I may be reading it wrong here but is there 2 4gb sticks in and you want to add an extra 8gb stick? that would make 3 sticks of ram which would not be dual channel

yes, you read right. But the question is about populating both channels with different sizes RAM. Some people say that populating both channels will still run in dual channel.

I'll just wait for a more concrete answer, thanks anyways.

ahh I apologise, I misunderstood what you were asking.

As most motherboards go they have 4 ram slots and work either:
Single Channel
Dual Channel
2 x Dual Channel

As tea urchin has said it would work but the timings would be off and need setting up for them to run optimally.
