A friend has an old rig, and is looking to upgrade on a budget. He needs a new processor, but can't afford swapping out the motherboard (unless someone has a very cheap alternative).

Currently, he has an OEM Foxconn RS780. https://panam.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/Shared/4006272R/4006272Rsp2.shtml

I need to know what kind of processor would work with that motherboard. He right now has an AMD 9150e 1.8GHz quad core, which obviously isn't much. Right now I'm looking at the Phenom X4 9850. I wanted to be sure that would work though, or if anyone has a better suggestion, please do let me know. Thanks for any help!

PS: He currently has a 500W PSU and isn't pulling nearly that much, so that isn't a concern.

Solution
The best way to find the right CPU is to look by the processor's order code (OPN.) There are two Phenom X4 9850s, a 125 watt Black Edition (HD985ZXAJ4BGH) and the 95 watt non-Black Edition unit (HD9850WCJ4BGH). This code is listed on the top of the CPU's heat spreader. Just make sure you can see this and that it says HD9850WCJ4BGH and you will be fine.
The link you gave states that only 95W CPUs are supported, so a 125W CPU may damage it.

There are two versions of the Phenom X4 9850, a 95W model and a 125W model. You'd need to be sure that the 9850 you'd get is the right version. The same is true for the Phenom X4 9750 at 2.4GHz. The fastest supported CPU that is only 95W is the Phenom X4 9650 at 2.3GHz.
