My laptop came with 8 GB of ram (pc3l).. and it is expandable upto 16 GB..
so I tried to add an extra 4gb of ram in the other slot.. this ram used to work on other laptop..i took it off from that and installed in my laptop.
Then I went to task manager and checked whether the ram has been detected or not..
It still shows 7.9 GB of ram instead of 12 GB
What to do?
I tried to interchange the ram in different slots.. but still the same
I went to CPU-Z and checked again.. there it is showing that two slots have been used with 8gb ram and 4gb of ram respectively..
Both rams have the same specs.. SODIMM
PLEASE HELP
Thanks in advance! :)

Just because they are both SODIMM docent mean they are guaranteed to work. Are they the same brand, speed and latency?

Look, I think the problem is not with your system here. I mean, I added RAM to my computer once and task manager said that my form factor changed from SODIMM to DIMM, which is basically impossible. So check it like this, if you're sure about the correct ram speed and type, then there is probably no problem at all, especially if CPU-Z registers the RAM. Try it out by downloading 'passmark', which should give you more info about your current system. See if the extra 4 gb are registered here. If not, perhaps go to a specialist computer hardware store to see if there is actually a serious issue.
Anyway, I'm quite sure that there is no problem.

no! they are of different brand and it doesn't matter with the branding, right? And the speed is same.. both are of 1600mhz, both came with different manufacturers.. Hyundai and Elpida, the part numbers are different, they both have same frequencies, CAS#Latency are same, RAS# to CAS# is same, RAS# Precharge is same and all the factors are same.. except the voltages.. my ram has voltage of 1.35v and the one i try to fit in has 1.50v. I heard pc3l is a low power ram.. is tat the problem? the ram which I'm trying to use is not PC3L.
The one i use is a PC3L Ram.

First of all, I'm sorry for the negative point, I'm kind of new to this forum.
So, u are saying that the voltage difference doesn't matter?
I'm confused whether the ram is dd3 or dd3l

I heard that we can reduce or increase the ram voltage with some software, is tat true?
if yes, can i make my ram working?

I just downloaded pass mark.. in the 3D motherboard visual, I selected the ram and it said I'm using two rams, one is 8GB and the other one is 4GB. It is showing that I'm using both rams but the total physical memory is showing as 8.0GB
