Hi there all,
Some bit of a nerd here too, but after messing with this problem for some time and not able to find the correct answer, I have to concur... and ask your help.

My PC (3 Linux distros, no Win) makes my USB ports stop working sometimes all of a sudden.

This could be while doing nothing special (only USB device being Logitech wireless mouse), and out of nothing it stops working. Replugging it back in doesnt work.
This also happens with a normal wired mouse, it would suddenly stop but the red LED will continue to burn. Unplugging and connecting again makes the LED not even work, USB sticks will not show up, their LEDs will not turn on etc. Power seems to be lost or not big enough.

For a long time I have had to wiggle my mouse when the GUI starts in Fedora Linux, otherwise there could be a chance the mouse wouldnt work at all. That seems now fixed, but not sure.

I only have this problem (usb shutdown) once in weeks, but last night I had it constantly, trying to copy some music to my Sandisk Clip+. It will copy some 25mb/300mb and then just stop. It hangs, the mouse will keep on working for a short time (safely unmount the Clip+ would not help, even after disconnecting the Clip+ the file browser kept displaying it) and well some short time after the Clip+ stopped copying files, the USB mouse would stop too.

Debian Linux would recognize the Clip+, with which I could transfer some music, Fedora Linux even wouldnt "see" the Clip+ though (even lsusb in terminal wouldnt show it).

After rebooting constantly trying to get some music on the player, and it would still not work, I did a BIOS reset (removing CMOS battery) which seemed to have helped. It worked flawlessly again this night, only to stop working this morning again.
A reboot later it worked again. Trying to get the same problem again, I tried to hang as many USB devices I have to my PC. All of my USB sticks opened, my mouse still worked.... even copying gigabites to all showed no problems (so it seems no power problem). My Clip+ also worked properly. Until it stopped again.... just like the mouse etc. Something I noted that when I was copying files to the music player and it showed a slow rate of 1mb/s, the usb would shutdown any later. If the transfer rate was a better 3mb/s or higher it would not shutdown!

What could this be?

Well as it seems to be there is a connection between copying music to my Clip+ music player and the USB stopping to work. Ive tried to connect my mouse and music player to all 10 USB ports and it made no difference, they would stop at some time.
Also Debian did recognize the Clip+, while Fedora wouldnt....

This would lead to a faulty music player, were it not that I have had this problem way longer (for over a year) with my USB devices suddenly stopping to work. It only seems to happen more often with the Clip+.

When suspending Debian Linux I sometimes experience no working USB too, but that is maybe once in the 30 suspends, dont think that is related as that could be a software thingie. In Fedora Linux, if the mouse (or any USB) would not work at all from the beginning, it would not go to work too. If the USB works in Fedora it may keep on working or failing after some time, in Debian it always works at boot, just to stop working sometimes after minutes/hours.

I think it could be the Motherboard (try a BIOS flash?), could be the power supply, a grounding issue perhaps (case related), my music player or even my OSes. Note: Ive had many OSes and all experienced the same problem. The issue just happened now many times more than once in a few weeks.

Many thanks for reading.
Ruben

Well as it is built in a custom case it will cost quite some time.... but lets do it then. The Clip+ music player works fine on another PC so I dont think that is the problem, but possibly it triggers something. Thanks.
