Hi, i'm at a loss at which way to go. i currently have 2 way 980 ti on x99s, with I7 6 core processor.
i want the cards primarily for 4k gaming. any advice would be great.

Solution

I would say that even 2 way SLI 980 Ti's are preferable to two Titan X's regardless of brand. The reasoning is that 2 980 Tis costs about $1300 and 2 Titan X's costs about $2,200 for the same performance. It just doesn't make sense to spend an extra $900 without any performance gain.

Getting 980 Ti's in 3 way SLI will provide much better performance than 2 Titan X's or 2 980 Ti's in any game that has proper 3 way SLI scaling.

Go for 3-way 980ti SLI, it'll be cheaper, since you've already got 2, and the performance will be better. The Titan isn't that much better...

depends how many monitors you are running, at the end of the day youll need the TITAN's 12GB of VRAM for ultra 4k gaming, so say you had two monitors I would suggest two TITAN X's simply because you kinda need that 12GB, anything else and I would say 3 x 980TI but I know 4k does need that VRAM

i'm a little worried that they will overheat, i have corsair h100i cooler and 2 fans at front and two underneath. what is an acceptable cpu temp in 3 way sli when gaming in 4k. i have one monitor. thanks for the replies btw, much appreciated.

Go for MSI Gaming or ASUS Stix for aircooling, or watercool your cards. Everthing below 85°C should be fine.

I currently have two MSI, just got them last week so i still have time to return them and get the titans or just add another. i came into a little bit of money for the first time and thought sod it! the more i read about the titans, the more i've become seduced. I'm just not that clued up about the whole thing lol. I'm still learning, I'm a long, long, time gamer, but always been on consoles.

VRAM doesnt stack in SLI, itll stil be 6GB, check yourself before you rek yourself mate

well really, running one monitor you could just about get by with a single GPU. But for 4K two TITAN X's will be useful for the 12GB VRAM, whereas the 980TI's only have 6GB, and that doesnt stack up so youll still only have 6GB. So if you can afford it get the two TITAN X's

Vram is really important for 4K, it's used to handle the textures. Since 4K is 4 times the size of a 1080p screen, that's really important, the texture files are larger.

Yea, I'm sorry, I was a little confused with the whole SLI-non-stacking-Vram. Sorry for that. I think dual Titan X is the way to go for you, for sure if you can refund those other 2 GTX 980Ti's.

This was bad advice. Buying two Titan X will provide nearly identical performance to two 980Ti and it will cost twice as much. The 6GB of RAM in a 980Ti is enough even for 4K.

If you aren't getting performance you are happy with on two 980 Ti in SLI you won't be happy with the performance of two Titan X in SLI either. The fact is that 4K is very tough to pull off if you want max settings but a 980Ti SLI system is definitely the way to go if that's what you want.

This chart shows an average of performance across many games at 4K. A reference 980Ti is nearly identical to a reference Titan X. The factory overclocked Strix model scored better than a Titan X at 4K. Don't waste your money on Titans.

Here is the full review in case you want to see benchmarks in specific games.

you say 6GB VRAM is enough for 4k eh?

Trust mate, its not

Trust mate, it makes no difference. The Asus Strix review I posted actually has GTA V as one of the games they benchmarked. The Asus Strix 980 Ti had a higher framerate than the Titan X even with 6GB of VRAM.

it depends on what settings you have it on, but i would wanna get it as high as possible
At the end of the day VRAM is just as important as clock speed, and if you plan on doing other things, TITAN X has a few extra features that are less consumer grade, its zay's choice what jhe puts his money into and I persoanlly would get the 980TI's and get 144Hz triple, 4k is overated

@zay745, my opinion is that you should do neither option. Stick with the two 980 Ti's and wait until 1080 Ti model releases, then upgrade to two of those cards. The general assumption is that two of those Pascal architecture cards will be appropriate for 4K resolution @ 60 FPS.

I agree with this. SLI starts to produce diminishing returns after 2 cards. Some games that have really good 2 way SLI scaling have poor 3 and 4 way scaling.

Whatever you do though switching to two Titan X GPUs when you already own two 980Ti GPUs would be a colossal wast of money. It will cost you a couple thousand dollars and it won't really improve your gaming performance. Keep your money and put it towards a couple high end Pascal GPUs later this year like rcald2000 suggested.
