Wifi Keeps Dropping Out - Every Few Minutes...

Hi there

I've had a few issues with wifi and an extender that I bought so I decided to reset the router to factory settings - what a mistake, took 2 hours with BT on the phone to get normal connection again through the laptop.

Anyway, forgetting the extender for the moment, I am now having the wifi connection drop out every few minutes. Most importantly my father who sits next to me is NOT experiencing any issues at all.
I have checked other possible solutions regarding this issue and it does seem that there are plenty of options there and some work for some but not for others - I am in the latter category :(

Here is my information:

Laptop: Acer Travelmate P253E
Adapter: Broadcom 802.11n
Ram: 8gb
Processor: Intel Celeron 1000 @ 1.7ghz

Router: BT Home Hub 5
Connection: BT Infinity - Fibre Optic >38mb

When I'm connected the surfing is excellent, fast, clean and downloading @ around 4mb a second, couldn't be happier, it's just this wifi dropping that's doing my head in!

I've been to the Acer website and downloaded the latest adapter driver and it's installed and I have changed the power settings as recommended elsewhere so that doesn't affect anything.

I've also done the cmd: netsh reset thing, rebooted etc but still no joy...

Someone mentioned to right click the network adapter within Device Manager, choose Properties and then advanced and change to ad hoc? What do I change to ad hoc though? As far as I can see when you click Advanced there is a panel on the left with lots of "things" and a little box at the top right to change the state (enabled, disabled etc) - would this help (If I knew what to do)???

Any other suggestions would be great please... I am presuming it's something on this laptop that I need to do as my father never drops out, my mobile works fine connected to the router etc as does the TV when they're using it to watch something on catch up (I would have heard about it otherwise lol)

Much appreciated to anyone who can help with this.

Cheers

Cheekybadger.

Well, after all this I think I've found the problem.
I use Utorrent for downloading and whilst it's never caused a problem before, it seems this time (since Windows re-install and subsequent installation of UT and other apps) that it has done!! It all happened this morning when I was surfing happily for hours, no problem (which at first struck me as being odd) and then I thought, well, happy days, I'll get on with my downloading - bang, no wifi !! So, based on that it triggered a thought.. conflict or connections problem... so I went on the Google hunt and found a couple of articles with some settings to change regarding Max Global connections and max connections per torrent - I reduce the default (which were 100 and 50 respectively)...

I've had a similar issue too, try to "forget" that wifi network in your wifi option, it's probably an issue with the password. After you've done that, enter your password again, and see if it's fixed.

Hi there

Yes, did that yesterday upon another suggestion and it hasn't made a difference, but thanks for the suggestion.... getting to the point where I want to launch it out of the window and go and buy another laptop :(

Cheers.

Have you got another wifi adaptor laying around? Costs only $25, and it's probably worth trying, since that costs a lot less than a new lapop ;). I recommend this one: Netgear WNDA3100.

No, I haven't - do you reckon it's worth trying one of those usb WiFi adapters?
I remember having this problem last year but I can't remember how I fixed it and it's been fine since... it must be something simple as this has only happened since rebooting the bloody router..
I'm in the UK but sure I'll be able to find one to try, you reckon it's worth a shot?

Cheers.

Wifi adapers can do weird stuff... But I think this should be like an "easy fix", there should be a way to fix the adapter in your pc, but this way it'll go faster. Maybe should wait for other people to answer before buying it ;)

OK, will do - thanks :) Yes, I've done the usual stuff, checked settings, power settings etc, and every time I reset it in wireless and network centre to get the connection back it connects quickly and effortlessly and all is fine again - having said that it's not dropped for 15 minutes now lol - so bizarre!!!

Fingers crossed I'll get some more things to try, I don't mind trying different things time after time to see if they make a difference, as you say it could well be something simple with the adapter (I think so too) a little tick here or there and all sorted, I hope ;-)

Still no joy :( I have just ordered this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00N7474CS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 so will see if that sorts out the problem. I really cannot think what else it can be other than a faulty card. Nobody else out there (I've posted this on three tech/support forums and nobody has been able to provide a solution so keeping everything crossed :( If not, then I'll whack the card on ebay and bin the lappy and buy a new one LOL !!

Thanks again, I'll let you know how I get on on Tuesday :)

Since this started with resetting your router I wonder if after the reset you put all the settings back how they were previously? Since you have an extender too it might have something to do with channel interference or DHCP interference that was created if the router wasn't returned to the correct settings.

How do you have your network set up? Is the 2nd device a repeater, extender, bridge, is it wired to the 1st or not......... The is nomenclature for these things is sadly somewhat interchangeable so you need to clarify.

Hi there

I don't actually have the extender connected at the moment as I want to get this issue rectified before I try and work out why that won't work - it's also worth pointing out that mobile devices AND my father could connect to the extender but I couldn't - which I guess leans more towards (again) the fact that this is all an issue with my device/adapter/set up etc...

Also, I have checked the download file from Acer for the drivers and I'm a bit confused which one to use - there is more than one setup.exe file and also a 64 folder (which I presume is for 64bit which my machine is) - in which case, could it be that I am not installing all the items needed for my adapter to function corrrectly?

Here are the screen shots of the main folder contents and the sub contents of the 64 folder. I am currently just double clicking the main setup.exe file near the bottom of the list... maybe someone can shed some light on the other exe files and if I need them?

Many thanks for all the help.

Just clicking that "Setup.exe" should do, the 64 folder is just part of the files that need to be installed, don't worry about it. If that doesn't fix it, I think you'll need to wait until that adapter arrives.

Will have to wait until tomorrow then as it's still just as bad - most annoying is that I can't just leave it downloading something as I have to constantly keep an eye getting ready to reset the adapter./connection :(

Thanks again..

That was over an hour ago, everything downloading as it should be, surfing fast, no problems ... so it looks like I can return (unopened) my new wifi adapter card..!!
Of course if anything changes then I'll post back but hopefully this could help someone else in the same position as myself (along with all the other options out there).
Thanks again to those that offered help.
