Hi and thanks in advance for your help!

I am looking to upgrade my 4yo gaming PC as it has been significantly falling behind in performance with newer games.

My current specs:
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 945
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460
Memory: 9GB DDR3
Display: 1920x1080
Mainboard: ASUSTeK M4A785TD-M EVO, Chipset AMD 785G and x16 PCI-Express

I don't have the biggest budget (~700€) and was hoping to get away with just upgrading my GPU and CPU. I've read that newest games get most of their performance through the GPU, and one merely needs a CPU to keep up and not bottleneck. I'm certainly no hardware pro and was hoping to get some advice here.

I've been eyeing the GTX 970 as a GPU. I'm pretty certain my current CPU would reduce it's performance significantly and have been looking into CPUs and just read the Intel Core i5-4690 would be a good choice to go with the GTX 970.

My questions: is the CPU/GPU combination good? Performance wise, is the GTX 970 a good choice or would I have to upgrade again in a year or two to keep up with newest games? I'm fairly clueless about mainboards and so far only read that it needs a x16 slot to run the GTX 970; is my mainboard otherwise sufficient or are there other things to consider?

I'm new to this forum and hardware technicalities in general, so please let me know if I posted wrong or additional information is needed! Thank you very much for your help!

I know that it's not in euros but the price is just under 700€. It's sort of reference of what you can get. But really, I would wait for the new NVIDIA or AMD gpus to come out this year.
