First build, looking to get started - budget up in the air, looking at about $500-600 initial cost, add more later

First build, microcenter currently has i5-6500 for $190, should I go for it and base my build off of it? I was debating between this cpu and the i5-6600k

Is your budget including OS, monitor, mouse and kb? Let us know and we can adjust. I threw together a build that will get you started. You can change the ram out for 1x8gb stick if you want 2x8gb later. Also the 550w psu will give you room for a gtx 970 later on if you choose to go down that road. I didn't include a cpu cooler since you won't be overclocking and if that's the case you could even grab an h110 or h170 mobo. Otherwise you could grab the 6600k and keep the z170 then grab a cooler later on and OC.

Well I've actually upped my budget a bit. It will be a general use pc, multitasking, perhaps some light video editing and gaming. I actually have put together a decent parts list (see below). Zach, I like what you put together as well. I don't not need a monitor etc, I'm looking for the hardware itself, although will need OS, which I'm not really factoring into the build list.

What I have currently in mind:http://pcpartpicker.com/user/ZEBuckeye81/saved/KXxp99

The thing about stepping down to the 6500 and h170 mb is it doesn't really lower the cost much, plus with the 6600k and Z170 I'll have more flexibility going forward. I've thought about settling for something far more budget using a i3, but I figure if I'm going to build I might as well get something that I'll be happy with for quite a while

Oh, thank you I wasn't aware of that!

Buckeye, I would recommend the H7 over the 212 Evo but either will do their job just fine. Other than that it looks just fine. Grab a HDD and GPU later and you're set.

Zach, I like the look of that build you suggested. I guess it just comes down to whether I want to pay the difference and go with the 6600k or just go with the 6500. Not entirely certain how I feel about OCing, however it could be nice to have that option to eek a little more pep out of my system down the road

Overclocking is the next step from building a PC. It seems daunting until you do it once or twice and you realize it's just a little tedious but fun and rewarding.
If it's something you're really not interested in then yeah of course you can grab the 6500. Otherwise, it's definitely worth the inherent performance gains from the 6600k, plus the overclocking potential.

My FX 8320 was pooping at stock speeds and when I overclocked it from 4.0 to 4.4 I got solid improvements in my minimum fps in games so I'm very happy with it. I no longer feel like buying an R9 390 or 4690k/6600k every few days or weeks.

That's what I've read, that they're looking to stop overclocking of non k chips.

Pretty certain I'm convinced to just go ahead and do the k build and not look back. Now I just need to find the exact components I want to use and best prices.

For psu, I had a EVGA B2 750w Bronze semi modular for under $50 recommended to me as an alternative to the more expensive options.

My next step will be looking at gpu for adding down the road a few months. Will most likely be looking to stay under $200 bucks.
