Since I’m not to computer savvy and an old man I’ll ask you younger computer savvy people a question on how to do the following.

I’m upgrading my laptop HHD from a 320 GB 5400 RPM drive to a 500 GB 7200 RPM drive using windows 7 as my OS. My plan of attack is to remove my old HHD drive and install the new 500 GB 7200 RPM. Once I have the new drive installed I will use my Windows 7 recovery disks to install the OS.

Now I guess here comes the interesting part of the equation. Since my new HHD will only have information without updates etc. How can I extract that information off the old HHD along with other files I may want from the old HHD? Can I use a enclosure with the old HDD installed and extract this information via a USB hook up?

Since this is the old HHD with a Windows 7 OS installed will there be a conflict between the two drives? I just want to make certain I do this right the first time around.

Hopefully I have explained my dilemma and you will be able to bail this old man out of his predicament.

Thanking you in advance for your assistance.

I think a better "plan of attack" for your consideration given your situation is the following...

It's a relatively simple process by connecting your new 500 GB HDD as an external USB device and then cloning the contents of your 320 GB HDD to the new HDD. Then, of course, install the new HDD in your laptop.

The old HDD can serve as a backup/storage device.

I'm assuming in all this that you are PERFECTLY satisfied with the Win 7 OS installed on the present HDD, i.e. it boots & functions without problems, except perhaps that you need more storage speed and believe the new 7200 RPM drive will provide significantly faster speed (the last an iffy proposition, but one hopes).

As to the disk-cloning programs..there are a number of freely-available ones on the net. Two of them are...
EaseUS Todo Backup Free program

Macrium Reflect

Obviously since the disk-cloning operation will, in practical effect, be a byte-for-byte copy of your "source" drive, all the updates currently present on the old HDD will be transferred over to the new cloned drive.
