Paying for 100 MB/S Internet And Only Getting 5 MB/S Download Speed?

Whenever I try to download a game from steam, the download stays at around 3-4 mb/s. When I try to play games like CS:GO, my ping will at random shoot up to 1,300 and keep spiking with few second intervals making the game unplayable. I recently upgraded internet and I now have a wireless connection. Do you think the router could be the problem? If so, what router do you recommend for this and if not, what do you think the problem could be?

If I need to I think I could find out what router I am currently using if that is also needed.

1. The performance you get from Steam is reported in megabytes
2. The performance your ISP tells you is megabits

approx 1:8 ratio
Given a 100megabit connection from your ISP, the absolute best you might see from Steam is 12 megabytes per sec.

3. WiFi. This is wildly variable.
What happens if you are connected directly the router via ethernet?

Not sure about the ethernet, the router is in another room across the house and I don't have a cable that's long enough. Whenever I use the speedtest.net website, it always gives me faster ratings than the actually internet. As for your points 1 and 2, that actually makes a lot of sense now. Like I said though, the highest I've ever achieved for download speed on Steam was 5 mb/s.

approx 1:8 ratio --that sounds just about right

76 megabits from bt infinity equates to a max steady download using a download manager of just on 9.5 to 10 megabytes

but yeah the megabytes --megabits thing when related to internet speed is confusing to a lot of people

a bit like the old why isnt my 500gb etc hard drive actually 500gb etc question

you got 2 different sides measuring with different methods

I understand now, but I'm still having a problem of insanely unstable ping? Some days my ping will hover around 40 the whole and and other days it just goes right up to the thousands. Do you know of any fix for this?

really you need to check what the speed and ping are connected by ethernet

or with a device using the same wifi adapter closer to the router to give something to compare

it could simply be due to lack of wifi signal strength/quality
