Will a good 650W power supply handle i5 4690K and two Strix 970s?

Will a good 650W power supply(80 Plus Gold rated) be able to handle a i5 4690K and two Asus Strix 970 graphics cards? I have a Asus Z97-A motherboard.

I am talking about the really good stuff - such as the Antec HCG or Seasonic M12II. I want to only go for fully modular power supplies.

If the answer is 'no' or 'yes, but close', then I'll have to go for a 750W. While that's no issue, I don't want to go for an unnecessarily oversized power supply.

Also, no XFX - they have no market penetration here.

FWIW, this is EOV's psucalculator link: http://outervision.com/b/ClUcqE

Hi - While a v good 650w unit will poer your system with 2 Strix 970's, I suggest you do go to
a good quality 750w unit. You have a "k" CPU so you plan to OC...
if your building the pc for the first time and have not gotten the parts yet. hold off for the newer pascal cards that are droping after april. you be able to buy one card that faster then the old 970 for about the same price and can use a 650w power supply and wont have to sli. your better off in real life not to sli.

I'd love to get one of the Pascals, but they'll involve a 2-month wait, and I think the GP104 isn't even ready yet, so that'll be longer. Will it be worth it to wait that long? I only have a GTX 650 to nudge along till I get there. Also, I'm using a 1080p monitor.

I have everything but the PSU and the 970.

Alright im getting this one :p http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-Modular-Crossfire-Warranty-210-GQ-0650-V1/dp/B017HA3SQ8/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1455507451&sr=1-1-fkmr0&keywords=Supeflower+650+W+Gold i think its enough plus i think im not going to change anything in 2 years.

As for me, I've gotten the Seasonic X-650 and the Strix 970.

I only have a 1080p monitor so I think the 970 will be enough for another year or two. Pascal's coming in some time, so I don't think I'll SLI - the 970 costs $420 here.

A PSU such as the X-650 should be enough for any single card, so I don't think I have anything to lose.

Get the EVGA B2 0750-VR. It is good, high-performance, and under $50 at the moment, although only semi-modular. The GQ is a more budget range. I would want to use a EVGA GS or G2 if I were getting a 650W Gold rated EVGA.

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying? Do you already have the Seasonic X? (you did not mention it in your original post)

It is a great PSU that can SLI two 970s, but I would not overclock them.

be running the 650 beyond 80% of it's max, which will shorten it's life.

PSU's are most efficient when operating in 40-70% range of their max output, and in your case
the xtra power should cause it to run a little cooler and quieter as it won't be working as hard.

If your post is directed at me - I did read it, have reread it, and don't see an issue with my response,
And would answer the same again if posted by someone else.

I agree with toyftw. When a 970 is overclocked, it could easily draw 250W under stress, and some have well-overclocked have even drawn 300W+ for brief moments in stress tests. Plus an overclocked CPU. If anything, 750W would be better for headroom and better efficiency overall.

The main capacitors of the Seasonic X-650 will handle the brief demand spikes and survive, of two stock STRIX 970s, if the OP is telling us that the HAVE a Seasonic X-650. That part was not clear to me, which I understand if English is a second or third language for the OP.

Ah - looks like the OP was thinking I was replying to his later post stating he purch an X-650,
but I was following SOP at the time and answering the question posed initially.

He (or she) made a good choice with the X-650, but I'm biased, mines been running flawlessly for 3.5 yrs!

I have edited the post now. I'm sorry at the outburst, it's just that I've seen a couple of threads today where guys are simply not reading threads before posting.

Well, I think I won't be going for two 970s. It's a bad decision now that Pascal is so close, and a X-650 is more than enough for any single card, including the one I might get a few years down the line.

I do have two cards in this system, but one of them is just a GTX 650 for PhysX.
