For how long has this been going on? Sometimes it takes a while, several months ago for no reason it took 20 minutes for my Windows to start downloading an updates, I know its not the same, because yours is searching, but it may be the very same reason

Problem solved. After reading other posts about my problem I decided to try and install the latest edition of windows update client KB3112343 and it worked. Thank you all for your advice, I could have never figured this out on my own...

I didn't have the time or patience to do some of the things above. I did a hard shutdown by holding the power button for 10 seconds. Then I booted up in safe mode and been restored to a previous Point. Luckily I had a restore point that was only a few days prior. This was successful although I have not done another Windows update yet

Best thing I can tell any Windows user is to go to http://www.linuxmint.org and download a brand new, world class, operating system that is 100% free of cost. Also look on http://www.distrowatch.com If you like using a computer, Linux Operating Systems, all 230 current systems, have you covered. It has everything, including the ability to play all "Windows" games and all open source games and all online games by just installing the following four programs--WINE, Playonlinux, Steam, Cross-over. The last two programs have a yearly cost. Been using Linux for 10 years. the best news is you can not ever catch a virus, it just can't happen. Your computer will be new again.

SOLVED! for me.

MSBSAv2.x = M$ Baseline Security Analyzer ver 2.3 will check local machine or crawl network. Something in it tickles whatever is stuck.
Among other things, it will report you need a reboot. Reboot and things start running again.

Has worked for me from MSBSA2.0 on XP, 7 (32 or 64 pro), and 10 (pro).
