Is it possible to open .pdf files without having an Adobe Acrobat on my computer?

I was thinking if its possible to just install an extension for Google Chrome and open .pdf files with that extension, but not the .pdf files that I can click on while browsing the Internet, but the ones that are already on my desktop, or lets say, the ones that someone transfer from USB to my computer, can I open those in the Chrome or is it not possible? The reason why Im asking this is because Adobe Acrobat has an intrusive update window that I regularly shut down in the Processes, but it turns on its own again and its really annoying.

i do this myself. all you have to do is set chrome as the associated application to open .pdf files and it will open them in a chrome window when you click on them using the add-on you already have

right click a .pdf file and select "open with" and check the box for "make this the default" and select chrome from the options or browse for it. no more acrobat!!

i use a program called fox it which is a firefox add-on with a stand alone editor as well. same idea. i don't have flash installed either. most important stuff has moved to html 5 so no biggie. i am officially adobe free on my pc's :D
